26 Freedom of Movement
• The population of tiny Luxemburg increases 25% every morning when commuters pour in from the neighbouring countries: France, Beligum, and Germany.
• You need permisson to live or work in an EU country (other than your own). It is easy for a citizen in an EU country to acquire the necessary permission.
• Businesses in Sweden may employ immigrants from the whole world. But businesses in most EU countries are not allowed to do so. That closes Europe to most immigrants except for some refugees. |
extra Freedom of Movement in the Nordic Countries
• Citizens in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, & Iceland) can travel without passports and live throughout the region. • They may cross international boundaries as often as they wish to. Since the Øresund Bridge was built, it has become popular to live in Malmö (Sweden's third largest city), where it is less expensive, and commute to work in Copenhagen (Denmark's largest city). |
