24 Immigrants
• Being an Immigrant: Is life lovely i Sverige? Is it full of racism? Does it feel a bit schizo having roots in two countries? If the children in a family have adjusted to life in the new country more quickly than older family members, does that generate conflicts?
Labour migration: When someone moves to another country to work there
• Many people move to jobs in Germany (mostly from Turkey), the USA (mostly from Latin America), Canada, Australia, etc.
• Many moved to jobs in Sweden during the 1950s-1970s, from the Nordic countries (primarily Finland) and from countries near the Mediterranean Sea.
• Many planned to work in Sweden for a few years, but stayed.
• Immigrants' work matters. Many immigrants work in publically-financed organisations (organizations) such as Kista International School & other schools, health care, public transportation, etc.
• Businesses in Sweden (since Dec 2008) are permitted to bring people to jobs in Sweden from anywhere in the world (as long as they are paid fair wages and provided with decent conditions).
• Many immigrants have no education which counts in Sweden. Others are highly educated specialists who work for example among the thousand researchers in Kista Science City.
• Immigrants (to Sweden) have won Nobel Prizes in Chemistry (H. von Euler-Chelpin, de Hevesy, Crutzen), in Medicine (Bárány, Granit), & in literature (Sachs).
