Mean Green Corvette

by Donald Dickinson © slightly modified

Jill was big now. She did not play with animals and toys. Now she liked to ride her horse, swim, and sing.

What did she like more than riding, swimming, and singing?

She liked to drive her father's mean ( utmärkt)   green Corvette. And could she drive!

When she drove the Corvette, all the boys looked. The dogs looked. The old men looked. And her father looked. Too bad! Her father looked.

Her father said, "Jill, I know you know how to ride your horse and to sing. And I can see that you like to drive the Corvette too. I saw you driving it too fast. You went up and down the road gata   too fast. You went around the farm too fast. If you drive too fast, I will not let you drive the car."

Jill was sad ledsen. She liked to drive the car fast. But she knew that she could get hurt gör sig illa   by driving too fast.

She said, "I will not drive fast." She said it again and again. She would say it when she was in the car, driving around the farm.

When Jill was driving the car home after singing with her friends, a boy drove up.

"My car can go faster than your mean green Corvette," said the boy.

Jill drove on.

Again he said, "My car can go faster than your mean green Corvette."

Jill drove on. She did not go fast.

The boy gunned it (satt fart ). The car nearly flew nästan flög   down the road.

Jill said, "I will not drive fast. I do not want to get hurt gör mig illa, and I do not want to hurt the animals and children. And I do not want to hurt the mean green Corvette." She did not drive fast.

Then she saw the boy. His car had hit water. He was off the road.

He said to Jill, "Help, help! My car is on fire. I was going fast, hit water, and ran off the road. Help me put the fire out."

Jill jumped out of the Corvette, and put the fire out. Then Jill said, "Are you hurt?"

"Yes, my leg is hurt. I want to go home and get help. Take me home fast," said the boy.

Jill jumped in the mean green Corvette and gunned it (satt fart ). It took off flying. Rocks flew. Mud flew. Dogs ran. Horses ran. And a boy on a bike ran off the road.

Jill flew down the road. The mean green Corvette flew past the Joe's farm. It flew past the forest. It flew past the pond damm. It flew past the house with the girls.

The horses looked, the old men looked, and all of the boys looked. And Jill's father looked. Too bad. Her father looked. Jill drove to the boy's house. The boy's father took the boy out of the car and to the house.

He said to Jill, "You put out the fire, and you drove my boy home. You are a very good girl. I will call your father."

Jill did not drive home fast. She saw her father. He was in the road. What would he do? Would she drive the car again? She loved the mean green Corvette. But she knew not to drive fast.

Her father looked at her and said, "I saw you driving too fast. But the boy's father called me and said you helped his boy. I will let you drive the car again. But do not drive fast."

Jill drove the mean green Corvette. It was fun. When she drove she said, "I will not drive fast. I will not drive fast — unless I see a boy with a broken leg."
